Community Joins Together in Support of San Diego Habitat for Humanity’s Veterans Build
Program provides more affordable, more stable home environments for veterans.

SAN DIEGO, CA – San Diego Habitat for Humanity’s Veterans Build event is being held this month and will bring together groups and individuals from all walks of life in support of Habitat’s programs serving local veterans in need of improved housing.

San Diego County is home to more than 240,000 veterans, one of the highest concentrations in the country. San Diego Habitat for Humanity, as part of Habitat for Humanity International’s Veterans Build Initiative, provides housing solutions and volunteer and employment opportunities to U.S. veterans, military service members and their families.

Habitat’s veteran services include providing housing solutions – both affordable homeownership opportunities and general home repair and preservation – engaging volunteers in meaningful services, increasing access to financial literacy programs, and hosting special events that raise awareness of veteran housing needs.

Veterans Build volunteers will work on the construction of new homes in National City, volunteer at Habitat’s ReStore – our retail home improvement and donation centers – and perform essential repairs on the homes of local veterans.

One of those homes was purchased in the Valencia Park neighborhood of San Diego over 30 years ago by Sylvester and DeBorah. The couple does what they can to maintain and repair their home, but it is in dire need of repair.  Habitat has already replaced the roof and windows; volunteers of Veterans Build will work on protecting the exterior of the home with a fresh coat of paint, will repair a shed, and install manageable landscaping.

In addition to volunteering their time, all Veterans Build participants have committed to raising or donating funds that directly support veteran services and the construction and preservation of homes throughout San Diego County.

San Diego Habitat is honored to have the support of City National Bank as our Platinum Sponsor. Opened in 1954 and based in Los Angeles, City National Bank invests in the communities it serves as a matter of business practice, donating millions of dollars annually to support civic and charitable programs and organizations that contribute to the community’s long-term success and well-being. City National Bank is a continued partner to Habitat, having encouraged 600 employee volunteer hours and sponsoring other Habitat programs and events.  Their current donation of $10,000 is helping to make Veterans Build possible.
