No matter who we are or where we come from, we all deserve a decent place to call home.

We deserve to feel strength and stability day after day. We deserve to know we have the power to take care of ourselves and build our own futures.

At Habitat for Humanity, this is what unites us.

Through shelter, we empower. Our shared vision is a world where everyone has a decent place to live. Because you, me, we — we’re all humans. And every single one of us deserves the opportunity for a better future.

INCLUSION

All are welcome here.

San Diego Habitat for Humanity has an open-door policy — all who believe that everyone needs a safe, healthy, affordable place to live are welcome to help with the work, regardless of race, religion, age, gender, political views, or any of the other distinctions that too often divide people. In short, Habitat welcomes volunteers and supporters from all backgrounds and also serves people in need of improved housing regardless of race or religion.

As a matter of policy, Habitat for Humanity International and its affiliated organizations do not proselytize.

This means that Habitat will not offer assistance on the expressed or implied condition that people must either adhere to or convert to a particular faith, or listen and respond to messaging designed to induce conversion to a particular faith.

HOUSING EQUITY

Housing justice paves the way for racial equity.

The rate of homeownership in California for Black and Latinx households is lower than ownership rates for white households. This is due to decades-long discriminatory housing policies such as redlining, which excluded buyers — based on race and ethnicity — from certain geographic areas and access to traditional financing for homeownership.

Home equity represents the largest financial asset for U.S. households and homeownership is the number one means of accumulating this generational financial security — something non-white households have historically and systematically been denied access to.

Habitat for Humanity aims to narrow the racial gap in homeownership through:

  • advocacy efforts, like our Cost of Home campaign

  • the construction of affordable homes

  • the provision of affordable mortgages to first-time homebuyers in traditionally underserved communities

DIGNITY FOR ALL

Dignity is a non-negotiable right.

All humans have worth. Habitat uses this principle to guide our interactions with those we are fortunate to partner with as we work toward providing fair access to safe, healthy, stable homes.

Through our homeownership mission, we empower families to act on their own behalf so that they are the ones ultimately in control of their futures. And we respect and support resident-led vision in our neighborhood revitalization work. The transformative power of home can be all a family needs to live in dignity for generations to come.
