San Diego Habitat for Humanity’s 16th annual Women Build drew more than 170 women from across San Diego County. Volunteer builders restored the safety of a Logan Heights duplex, which was damaged from flooding during January’s rainstorms. The project included repairing the duplex’s exterior and replacing the deteriorating fencing along with planting drought- and flood-resistant landscaping. At the same time, 11 teams built playhouses that will be donated to nonprofits that help area families in need, such as the Make-A-Wish Foundation and The Chicano Federation. The event raised more than $100,000 through sponsors and volunteers, and culminated with San Diego Habitat for Humanity honoring Luda Safransky with the Women Builder of the Year Award for her eight years of participation in the annual event, bringing together more than three dozen builders. Since it started in 2009, Women Build has brought together more than 2,300 volunteers to build or renovate 65 homes across San Diego County and raised more than $1.2 million to support affordable homeownership programs.
