On January 19, San Diego Habitat for Humanity joined our colleagues from Habitat affiliates across the state to advocate for the creation of more affordable homeownership opportunities — at Habitat for Humanity California’s 11th Annual Advocacy Day. Over 100 advocates took part in virtual meetings with nearly every California State Senator and Assemblymember to stress the importance of homeownership and the impact it can have on closing the racial wealth gap caused by decades of discriminatory housing policies in our state. We asked for an increase in funding specifically for homeownership new construction, as well as for updates to existing funding programs and policies that would allow homeownership projects to compete for funding that is often funneled solely to affordable rental projects.
